Shopify Headless News: Shopify Announces Native Subscriptions App

Allowing customers to purchase subscriptions to products is a crucial feature for many e-commerce businesses.

Up until recently, the world of headless subscriptions has mostly been enabled through the use of third-party apps such as Seal and Recharge. And while these apps have mostly received positive reviews, many people in the e-commerce world have been left to wonder why subscriptions aren't a native feature of the Shopify platform, considering how many businesses rely on having them as an option.

At the very least, there should be a native subscriptions app - developed and maintained by Shopify - that one can install right away in order to get set up with subscriptions, don't you think?

Well luckily our prayers have finally been answered. Only a couple of weeks ago, Shopify came out with the exciting announcement that they had launched their official Shopify Subscriptions app as part of their 2024 Winter Edition release:

The Good Alchemy team was so excited by this announcement that we decided to dive in immediately and test it out.

Despite seeing some initial complaints from other merchants/developers that the app lacks some features available in other third-party subscriptions apps, we ourselves are loving this initial release and the main features it offers, including a seamless integration into headless storefronts via the Selling Plan object available through the Storefront API. We are also highly confident that the Shopify team will continue to respond to user feedback, and update the app with more features over time.

In conclusion: for the majority of merchants looking to offer basic subscription options for their products, the Shopify Subscriptions app is an excellent choice that you will be able to rely on long-term.
